Note (General): 棚底城跡は中世城館のうち、天草諸島で唯一の国指定史跡である。調査に先んじて現状変更許可をいただいたうえで、調査を実施した。3次調査ではⅠ郭を囲う2重目の横堀及び竪堀の延長を確認した。竪堀を塞ぐようにあった石積は後世に構築されたものと断定できた。4次調査ではⅠ郭西部にある土塁状の高まりの性格を考えるうえで参考となる結果が得られた。高まりは岩盤を削り残して形成されていたことから、普請する段階でそれを形成することが設計されていたことが示唆される。類似する地形は上津浦城跡や志岐城跡に確認できる。また、高まりのすぐ脇に掘立柱建物が1棟検出されたが、性格は不明である。出土遺物は翡翠釉小皿等の比較的珍しいものもあるが、全体的に少なく、出土品もほとんどが小破片であった。
