Note (General): 南代遺跡は、井出川北側の段丘上に所在する。弥生時代中期の集落跡は、竪穴状遺構１軒で構成される小規模なものである。奈良時代の製鉄跡は、段丘平坦面の周縁に長方形箱形炉１基、調査区を東西に横切る谷を挟んだ両側に竪形炉11基、谷の南側に同時期の木炭窯跡６基が確認されている。長方形箱形炉の周囲には、竪穴住居跡および粘土採掘坑が確認され、同時期に機能したと想定される。また、長方形箱形炉の廃絶時には鉄刀を置き、廃滓による埋戻しを行っている。竪形炉群は谷の北側に主に構築される。谷の北側の竪形炉は原型をとどめるものには調査区内では確認できず、構築と破壊が繰り返されている。これら廃滓は谷に向かう流路中に投棄され、その量は28tに上る。谷の南側の竪形炉は重複はなく、炉の形態をある程度残しているが、土坑の一端に炉を構築したものなど特異な形態のものも見られる。木炭窯跡はいずれも地下式木炭窯跡であり、これらに道路状遺構や粘土採掘坑が重複して構築されていることなどから、製鉄遺構に燃料を供給したものと考えられる。従来、相馬地域の旧宇田・行方両郡においては、古代に製鉄が大規模に行われていたことが知られていた。本遺跡が属する旧石城郡内においても、同様な大規模な製鉄が行われていたことを示す資料となった。
