Note (General): 若林城は伊達政宗が晩年に造営した近世初めに短期間存続した城である。　これまでの城内の西側や中心地区で実施した調査では城の表御殿となる大型の礎石建物群や区画塀跡、さらに各建物を取り巻く多数の雨落ち溝跡や石敷き遺構、池跡、樋跡等の様々な施設を確認し、江戸初期の城郭御殿建築を知る上で極めて重要な発見があった。　今回報告するのは若林城跡第10次･12〜15次の5ヶ年の調査成果である。5ヶ年の調査では若林城内の表御殿と奥を区画する溝跡･塀跡･礎石建物跡･掘立柱建物跡などの施設を確認した。特に溝跡や塀跡の新旧関係から、若林城の存続した寛永5年（1628）〜寛永13年（1636）の短期間に施設の造り変えがなされていたことが明らかとなった。また、若林城廃城後の『御修復帳』に記された六郷堀を大手門近くから北門までの範囲で確認している。城内には造営時に埋められた河川跡も確認した。　遺物は、主に若林城の建物などに葺かれたとみられる瓦が多量に出土しているほか、中世から近代の陶磁器や近世の土師質土器の皿、金属製品なども出土している。若林城造営前の遺物としては古墳時代から平安時代までの土師器や須恵器などと縄文土器も出土している。
