Note (General): 史跡棚底城跡は中世城跡で、「天草五人衆関連城郭群(仮)」の取り組みの第1弾指定である。整備事業を行っている。　第5次発掘調査では横堀と土塁、石積遺構を検出し、横堀の埋没年代や埋没後の堀底を通路として利用したという所見を出した。　第6次発掘調査では第5次発掘調査所見の再検討も兼ねてトレンチを設定し、横堀の埋没過程を確認した。併せて横堀と土塁の末端を県内で初めて検出し、相良氏の技術供与を受けたとされる城郭において今後の参考事例となりえる成果が出た。また、虎口の想定地は土嚢で埋め尽くされて形成されていたことが判明し、史跡整備を進めるうえでの留意点も浮き彫りとなった。
