上加世田遺跡は，鹿児島県南さつま市の標高約20ｍの河岸段丘上に位置する遺跡である。県内の縄文時代晩期を代表し，上加世田式土器の標式遺跡でもある。　本遺跡は，1968（昭和43）年10月から11月に実施された１次調査を皮切りにこれまで12次の調査が行われている。１～６次調査において，河口貞徳氏が調査主体者もしくは調査責任者として深く関わった。その成果に関する資料や遺物は鹿児島県立埋蔵文化財センターと南さつま市教育委員会が保管している。そのうち，１～３次調査の成果を今日的視点で再整理したものが，本報告書である。　１～３次調査では住居跡・集石・ピット等が検出された。また，上加世田式土器を中心とした多量の土器，石斧や石鏃等の石器，岩偶，土製品，軽石製品，玉製品等が出土した。
