[常納原遺跡要約] 　常納原遺跡は，江の川支流の西城川上流域の東岸にある丘陵上に立地している。調査は庄原市教育委員会と当教育事業団が実施し，当事業団は２次にわたって調査を行った。　１次調査では主に竪穴住居跡８軒，掘立柱建物跡２棟，土坑15基，土坑墓１基，溝５条，性格不明の落込み３基を確認した。竪穴住居跡の内，Ａ区ＳＢ３の床面から山陰系甑形土器が２個体分出土している。ＳＢ５内の土坑から炭化した栽培種（イネ，アサ，アワ）が出土している。６世紀後半頃のＡ区ＳＸ１内から磁鉄鉱（総重量7.5kg）と椀形鍛冶滓（鍛錬鍛冶滓）が出土している。古墳時代中期のＢ区ＳＢ１と庄原市教育委員会調査の弥生時代終末期の住居跡から鍛錬鍛冶滓が出土しており，弥生時代終末期から古墳時代後期にかけて鉄器生産が行われていたと思われる。　２次調査では明確な遺構は落し穴２基であったが，２時期の柱穴群を確認した。時期は縄文土器（押型文）から縄文時代早期頃と考えられる。　本遺跡は縄文時代早期・弥生時代終末〜古墳時代後期の集落のほか，庄原市教育委員会の調査では古墳を２基確認している。縄文時代早期の遺跡は，西城地域では最も古い集落跡である。また，古墳時代前期以降に鉄器の生産が行われていたことや，後期以降は鉄鉱石の出土から周辺に製鉄遺跡が存在している可能性が考えられる。
