[植物園北遺跡・下鴨半木町遺跡要約] 今回の調査では、おもに奈良〜平安時代の遺構群を確認し、同時期の竪穴建物９基、掘立柱建物39棟を確認した。過去の調査で、遺跡の北部から東部では、古墳時代前期を中心とした集落が展開することがわかっていたが、遺跡の南部では、奈良〜平安時代を中心とした集落が大きく広がることが判明した。確認された遺構のなかで特に注目されるのは、三面廂をもつ平安時代前期の掘立柱建物ＳＢ5130である。奈良時代後期の建物群は方位を大きく西に振るものがみられるが、この建物を含む平安時代前期の建物は、おおよそ真北に向けて揃えられており、集落が平安時代前期に規格性をもって整備されたことがわかった。調査地は、平安京の北東の京域外にあたるが、山城国一宮として崇敬された上賀茂神社や下鴨神社が所在する地域であり、奈良時代後期から平安時代前期に大きく開発されたことがわかった。また、三面廂の大型掘立柱建物が見つかったことから、一帯は有力な集団の居住域であった可能性がある。今回の調査によって、平安京遷都（794年）前後の京域周辺における集落の構造と変遷を知る貴重な資料を得ることができた。
