[西谷町山王通遺跡要約] 　西谷町山王通遺跡は横浜市の中西部、帷子川中流域左岸の丘陵斜面上に立地し、近世と縄文時代の複数の時代にわたり遺構・遺物を確認した遺跡である。調査地は相模鉄道本線西谷駅の南西側に位置している。遺跡の所在する横浜市保土ヶ谷区の西谷地区の段丘は、海抜標高は約25〜26ｍを測り、調査地点は帷子川とその支流である菅田川・中堀川の分岐地点同士のほぼ中間、帷子川分水路の東側にあたる。縄文時代の遺跡は、丘陵上の南向き斜面上に展開された、陥穴やピット群で構成される狩猟地を検出した。その周辺からは、縄文時代中期及び後期の深鉢形土器の破片や、打製石斧・磨石などの石器が見つかっている。近世では土坑や焼土址・溝状遺構など様々な種別の遺構を検出し、中でも溝状遺構は調査区全体を東西に通過するようにして確認することが出来た。調査地点の北側には、古くは八王子往還、又は八王子道と呼ばれた古道と目される道路があり、溝状遺構はこれらに沿う向きで確認されたことから、古道の側溝などの付帯施設であった可能性も考えられる。遺物は18世紀代以降の肥前系・瀬戸美濃系陶磁器、かわらけ、砥石などの石製品、銅製の煙管などの金属製品が出土している。西谷町山王通遺跡は本県横浜市域西部地域において複数の時代・時期にわたり展開する遺跡群の様相を解明していく上で、貴重な資料の一つとして評価出来る。
