Note (General): 茂手木遺跡は利根川沿いの自然堤防上に立地する遺跡である。調査は２次に亘って実施され、第１次調査では９世紀後半を主体とする集落跡や古墳時代後期の土器集中が、第２次調査では平安時代の畠跡と古墳時代の畠跡が検出された。古墳時代の畠跡は調査区全域に広がり、位置を変えながら耕作が行われている状況が判明した。平安時代にも当初は畠として利用されていたが、９世紀中頃に集落域として利用されるようになる。集落跡からは、活発な地域であったことが判明した。また「寺」や「秋」などの墨書土器も出土し、「寺」の墨書土器は当時の仏教信仰を示す資料と考えられる。
