Note (General): 栗橋宿本陣跡は、利根川右岸に立地する日光道中の宿場「栗橋宿」の本陣跡を含む遺跡である。発掘調査は19世紀前半の遺構を中心とする第一面と、18 世紀以前の遺構を中心とする第二面で実施した。本書には本陣跡の南側に隣接する、町屋地区推定地における調査成果を集録する。　調査の結果、第一面で町屋の敷地境と考えられる杭列、木樋、溝跡が検出されたが、第二面の調査では明確な敷地境は検出されなかった。19 世紀前半のいずれかの段階で、敷地境の施設が整備されたことが窺われる。敷地の境と江戸期の絵図は概ね対応しており、出土した墨書資料と絵図にみえる住人が一致した区画もある。　本陣敷地付近では、広域にわたり火災処理に係る土壙が検出され、陶磁器・瓦類・炭化した繊維製品や紙本資料等の遺物が多量に出土した。また、本陣池田家の家紋「揚羽蝶」が付く鬼瓦も出土しており、本陣の建物も被災した可能性が高い。この火災は、史料にみえる文政５年（1822）の大火と推定され、栗橋宿本陣跡の変遷を考える上で定点となる遺構群と位置付けられる。　遺物では、僅かなヨーロッパ産・中国産の陶器類に加え、組物を中心とする国産陶磁器が多く検出された。土器類では、江戸のものと異なる在地の製品がかなり認められた。瓦類には「荒木村」の刻書資料があり、今の行田市荒木からの供給が確認された。土壙を中心に出土した多種多様な一括遺物は、近世宿場町の実態を示す良好な資料群と位置付けることができる。
