Note (General): 本遺跡は、飯縄山を水源とする浅川によって形成された扇状地上に位置する。調査地区内からは、縄文時代や弥生時代中期の遺物が少量みつかっているが、弥生時代中期以前の遺構は確認されていない。　弥生時代後期中葉と後葉には集落が営まれ、後期終末には方形周溝墓が築造されている。方形周溝墓の周溝からは、口縁が２重となる赤い壺や北陸地域の影響を受けた土器が出土している。　古墳時代は、前期から後期までの遺構がみつかっている。特に前期は大規模な墓域を伴う集落が確認されている。また、竪穴建物跡から出土した北陸地域や東海地域の特徴をもつ土器は、古墳時代に東日本の各地で展開された広範囲な地域間の文化的交流をうかがわせる。　古代の集落跡は、９世紀まで一時期30軒程度のかなりの規模の集落が営まれるが、10世紀以降になると竪穴建物跡は確認されず、集落は別の場所に移動したと考えられる。一般集落にはあまりみられない筆立付円面硯や帯金具、緑釉陶器などが出土し、官衙との関連も注目される。　中世は、調査地内から堀跡や井戸跡が確認されていて、居館の一部となったと思われる。また、近世以降の土坑や、生活雑器の陶磁器類や銭貨、金属製品などが北国街道沿いに多数確認されており、現代の「町」につながる基礎が形成されたことがわかる。
