Note (General): 巣鴨遺跡は江戸五街道の一つである中山道の両側に広がる遺跡で、日本橋から約7.3Kmの距離にあり、その総面積はおよそ39万㎡に及ぶ。これまで豊島区教育委員会の指導により、100カ所を超える地点の調査が行われているが、そのいずれもが数百㎡以下の小範囲である。　今回の調査範囲は、江戸時代中期までは譜代大名水野家、中期以降は越後三日市藩の柳沢家の下屋敷跡にあたり、この水野家敷地と中山道との境の溝を調査することができた。　これまでの豊島区の調査により、同溝は巣鴨遺跡の他の調査地点数カ所で検出され、寛永江戸全図ほかの絵図史料と対比されているが、今回の調査でもそれを裏付ける結果を得るとともに、時期による変化も明らかとなってきた。　旧中山道の調査では、調査範囲が14㎡とわずかではあったが、その版築構造を明らかにすることができ、その年代を推測する陶磁器等の資料を得ることが出来た。　隣接する染井遺跡は江戸時代中期以降、観賞用の植物栽培が盛んなところで、それを裏付けるような植栽痕また大量の植木鉢などが出土しているが、今回の調査地点でも同様の傾向が見られる。当地は絵図史料ほかから見て、武家の下屋敷地であったことは間違いないが、敷地内での実態は、江戸市中での武家地とはやや異なる様相を持つのではないかと思われる。
