Note (General): 西原遺跡は武蔵野台地の北東縁、石神井川北側に広がる成増台の南東端、石神井川を挟んで豊島台と接する台地平坦部から緩斜面にかけて立地する。東武東上線中板橋駅から北東へ約450 ｍ、住宅街の一角に本遺跡は位置する。平成３～４年にかけて、第１地点の発掘調査が行われており、今回の調査は第２地点となる。　調査の結果、縄文時代の土壙（陥し穴）、弥生時代の住居址、近世以降の溝や畝状遺構が確認され、旧石器時代の石器、縄文土器、弥生時代の土器・石器、近代の磁器が出土した。中でも弥生時代は本遺跡において中心となる時代であり、今回の発掘調査では弥生時代後期の住居址２軒を検出した。第１地点では同時期の住居址22 軒が発見され、この辺りに集落跡が広がっていたことが明らかになっている。今回の調査地点はこの集落跡の北側にあたり、その北限の様相を把握することができた。また、旧石器時代では遺構を確認することはできなかったものの、石核や剥片が出土したことから、当時の人々の活動範囲がこの辺りにまで及んでいたことがうかがえる。
