Note (General): 堀遺跡は那賀郡衙の関連集落として知られていたが，調査により奈良･平安時代と，中･近世に大別できる結果となった。奈良･平安時代では８世紀後半～ 10 世紀初頭へかけて営まれた集落の一部で，版築技法を伴う大型の掘立柱建物跡が調査されている。中･近世では15 世紀後半～ 16 世紀代に地下式坑や大型の土坑，掘立柱建物跡が機能し，17 世紀前半に台地が整形され，方形竪穴状遺構や井戸跡が構築された。その後整地され18 世紀に終焉を迎える。台地整形の目的については明らかにできなかったが，椀形滓や砥石が出土していることから工房が営まれた可能性がある。
