Note (General): 西原大塚遺跡は柳瀬川の南東、武蔵野台地北東端に所在する旧石器時代から近世までの複合遺跡である。第228 地点は遺跡の中央部に位置し、調査では縄文時代、弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期、奈良・平安時代、中世以降の各時期の遺構が多数検出された。　縄文時代調査では中期中葉から後葉にかけての住居跡と土坑が検出した。当該調査地点は縄文時代の環状集落の東端にあたり、４軒の埋甕炉を持つ住居跡と、３軒の埋甕を持つ住居跡を含む 12 軒が確認されている。この内、200 Ｊは 4 個体の口縁部片を組み合わせた特異なものである。　弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期では、26 軒の住居跡が調査され、中には凸堤が付帯する貯蔵穴と赤色砂利層が認められた。遺物は口縁部にキザミが施される甕形土器、赤彩された壺形土器が出土している。　奈良・平安時代では３軒の住居跡を調査した。いずれもカマドは北壁に設けられる。遺物は須惠器と土師器の坏形土器や甕形土器などが出土した。　中世以降では４条の柵列状遺構が検出さた。相互に有機的に機能していたものと見られ、中世以降における当該地のに土地利用状況を窺わせる。
