Note (General): 鹿児島県立埋蔵文化財センター発掘調査報告書城跡は慶長６（1601）年頃に薩摩藩初代藩主島津家久により築城された館づくりの近世城郭である。別名鶴丸城跡とも呼ばれ，築城以降，度重なる大火による焼失や自然災害による建物，石垣の等崩落，修復を繰り返し，現在は一部の石垣と堀，橋が残されている。本事業における発掘調査では，近世城郭を構成する遺構として，石管水道，排水溝，井堰，堀等の水利遺構，石列，石垣，裏込め等の石垣関連以降，坪地業や布地業，瓦溜りといった建物関連遺構，池状遺構，庭石といった庭園遺構，能舞台橋掛り跡を確認した。遺物は，多量の瓦を中心に他地域からの搬入品を含めた陶磁器，石製品，金属製品，木製品が出土した。特に瓦は近代までに及ぶ多種多様な種類の瓦が出土している。また，明治34（1834）年に建てられた官立第七高等学校造士館や戦後の鹿児島大学等に関連する遺構・遺物も確認された。さらに，エンフィールド銃の銃弾等，明治10（1877）年の西南戦争関連の遺物も出土している。　本書では，特に本丸跡を中心としたこれまでの発掘調査成果と本事業で確認された建物遺構や本丸全体の水利施設，能舞台跡の位置づけ，出土した陶磁器及び瓦の分類や時代ごとの変遷を明らかにした。文献・絵図・古写真等と発掘調査の成果が整合する部分もあり，南九州における近世城郭の様相や機能，変遷，社会情勢の一端をうかがえる資料となった。
