Note (General): 史跡西部の段丘西縁部に造営された飛鳥時代の斎宮中枢域を総括した正報告書となる。　７世紀後半から８世紀初頭の掘立柱塀で構成される方形区画を確認し、約33°東偏する「斜方位区画」の特徴が明確となった。掘立柱塀で遮蔽された内部空間には、中心建物（正殿）と外周建物（東西各３堂）がロ字型の建物配置をとり、方形区画西隣には複数の倉庫が配列する「倉院」の存在が明らかとなった。　掘立柱塀による囲繞を企図して、内部空間の拡張と正殿・東第一堂以外の建替えを伴う２段階の遺構の変遷が認められる。これらを飛鳥斎宮Ⅰ期・Ⅱ期と呼称し、Ⅰ期は７世紀後半、Ⅱ期は７世紀末～８世紀初頭に比定した。このような重要施設を「飛鳥時代の斎宮中枢域」と呼び、斎王宮殿域（斎王の居所および執務・儀礼空間）の可能性を想定した。　飛鳥斎宮Ⅰ期は東西長約38.2ｍ、Ⅱ期は約40.8ｍ、南北長はⅠ・Ⅱ期ともに方形区画の西辺で約57.8ｍ、東辺で約59.0ｍ、正殿の中軸線で約58.4ｍを測る。造営尺を唐尺で換算すると、Ⅰ期は東西130尺、 Ⅱ期は東西140尺、南北西辺198尺、南北東辺202尺、正殿の中軸線で200尺と措定した。　飛鳥時代の斎宮中枢域やその周辺域をめぐる歴史的意義について考察した。伊勢神郡・神宮・斎宮の成立、皇大神宮（内宮）との親縁性、斎王宮殿域を中心とした空間構造をめぐる官衙的区域・官人層居住区域の重層的な配置の推定を行った。
