Note (General): 蓑首城跡は、宮城県亘理郡山元町坂元字舘下に所在する。蓑首城は、戦国時代末期から幕末まで機能した城館跡で、亘理郡一帯を治めていた亘理氏の家臣「坂本三河」が元亀3年（1572年）に築城したと伝えられている。蓑首城は「坂本要害」とも呼ばれ、坂本氏以後、後藤・黒木・津田の諸氏が居城した後、元和2（1616）年に、大條宗綱が伊達政宗より城を拝領し、明治維新までの252年間、大條氏の居城となる。　今回の調査箇所は、蓑首城二の丸跡の西半の範囲にあたり、調査の結果、掘立柱建物跡24棟、柱穴列跡15条、溝跡7条、井戸跡7基、土坑8基、竪穴状遺構1基などの遺構を検出した。これらの遺構からは、弥生土器、土師器（非ロクロ成形）、須恵器、陶器、磁器、瓦質土器、石器、金属製品、土製品、瓦が出土した。このうち、出土した陶磁器には、堤・岸・大堀相馬・小野相馬・瀬戸美濃・志野・唐津・肥前・佐波見などの産地があり、皿・碗・小坏・鉢類・擂鉢・甕・壺・天目茶碗・茶入れ・徳利・土瓶・袋物・瓶類・水差などの器種が出土した。陶磁器の年代は概ね16世紀～19世紀前半代の幅の中におさまることから、これらは蓑首城機能時に使用されたものと判断され、今回検出した遺構の多くは、16世紀後半（1572）年から19世紀半ば（1868年）まで機能した蓑首城二の丸跡の遺構群と考えられる。　現在のところ、蓑首城内の具体的な建物配置を示す文献史料は確認されておらず、今回の調査成果は、近世の蓑首城二の丸の遺構を考える上で貴重な成果となった。また、明治維新後、学校用地として利用されてきた二の丸の遺構が想像以上に良好な状態で保存されていた事実を把握できたことも大きな成果と言える。
