Note (General): 調査では、大きく西側地区の１区と東側地区の２区で様相を異にすることが明らかとなった。西側地区の１区の大半が下位層の弥生時代前期～後期の遺物を含む埋積に始まり、最終埋積が鎌倉時代もしくはこれに近似する時期となる自然流路（河川）の範囲に当たり、東側地区の２区が弥生時代前期の生活域を含みつつ、主体は鎌倉時代の生活痕跡となる。　和田岩坪遺跡周辺は、従来の地理的な理解では低湿なラグーン性低地という生活域の存在の可能性が低いものであった。しかし、今回の調査では、弥生時代前期ないしは鎌倉時代の生活痕跡の存在が明らかとなった。また、地理的な理解の中で読み解かれていなかった南北方向に流向する自然流路（河川）も検出された。　また、西側の自然流路( 河川) が東側と同じような平坦地になるのが鎌倉時代もしくはこれに近似する時期に入ってからであることも判明してきた。このことは、文献史料等から指摘されている和田川の築堤と当地域一帯の土地開発の時期と関係してくるものと思われる。
