Note (General): 姫路城の三重の堀の内、外堀の南西部、延長約３０ｍを確認した。堀は、両面を石垣としている。石垣は、基底部付近に比較的古い様相が見え、築城段階の江戸時代初頭のものと考えられる。それより上部は、複数回の積み直しが行われたと考えられ、修復図等の近世史料から読み取れる状況を裏付ける。この付近では、元和年間に改修された船場川と平行するように外堀が設けられ、堀と川の間は石積みの土手で隔てられていた。これらにより、姫路城西側を厳重に防御するとともに、治水・利水も兼ね備えた巧みな築城の様子が明らかとなった。調査地の直ぐ南には、西国街道の西玄関でもある備前門がある。西国街道は複雑に屈曲して備前門に接続していたが、明治６年頃からこれを直線的に改める道路改修により一部が埋められ始め、明治年間には完全に埋められていたと考えられる。
