Note (General): 吉原遺跡は砂丘上に位置する弥生時代から近世にかけての墓地で、これまで約4700㎡が調査されている。県道の安全施設整備事業に伴う今回の調査によって弥生時代の方形周溝墓７基・土坑や奈良時代の火葬墓１基を確認した。方形周溝墓は中期に帰属するものが１基、後期末頃に帰属する方形周溝墓が６基である。後期末頃の方形周溝墓は墳丘裾に石積みをもつなど、和歌山県内では類例がない構造である。墳丘に石列・貼石などをもつ墳丘墓には、近畿北部の方形貼石墓や山陰地方の四隅突出型墳丘墓があり、関連が注目される。吉原遺跡では、既往の調査で弥生時代後期末の石を用いない通有の方形周溝墓も確認されており、同じ遺跡内で形態の違う方形周溝墓が造営されていることになる。このことは周辺地域と同様な方形周溝墓を築く集団と近畿北部や山陰地方などと繋がりがある集団が存在したと捉えることもできる。石積みをもつ方形周溝墓の発見は当地域の墓制や地域間交流を考えるうえで貴重な資料を提示したと言える。
