Note (General): 縄文時代早期後葉から前期初頭（ca. 8400～7000 cal BP）は，完新世初頭の海進（縄文海進）が進行していることに加え，南九州で発生した鬼界アカホヤ噴火（ca. 7300 cal BP）の影響を被っていると予想され，遺跡の消長や集落の構造，物資の移動に注意が払われてきた。本研究では，愛知県南知多町に所在する天神山遺跡の発掘調査から，この問題にアプローチした。天神山遺跡は知多半島南部に位置し，新第三紀層が作る小丘陵の斜面上に，遺物包含層が残されている。1956年の学術発掘調査では東海条痕文系土器の諸型式が層位的に出土し，東海地方西部やその周辺地域における，縄文時代早期後葉から前期初頭の土器編年の確立に寄与した。ただしその詳細は公表されておらず，当時の発掘調査区の場所さえも不明である。　今回の発掘調査では，遺跡の東縁部から斜面に沿って三つのトレンチを設定した。斜面上方の二つのトレンチ（A・B）では現代の廃棄物を包含する堆積物の直下から新第三紀層が検出され，縄文時代の堆積物は流出したと考えられた。斜面下方のCトレンチでは，前期初頭の塩屋式土器の細片を多量に含む黒色土層が検出された。堆積物の観察や土器片の分級度，円磨度の分析から，これらは斜面上方からもたらされた洪水堆積物と判断された。これらの遺物を残した人類集団の居住域は，斜面上方の尾根線付近に営まれたと推定され，尾根線をはさんだ東側に立地する天神山B遺跡，塩屋遺跡も同じ由来をもつ資料群と見なされる。遺跡の規模や動態は西日本の縄文時代遺跡に通有のものと想定され，知多半島南部の前期初頭の集落に鬼界アカホヤ噴火による深刻な影響を見いだすのは適当ではない，と判断される。
