Note (General): 天神山古墳は、合計８基の前方後円墳と１基の大型円墳からなる桂川古墳群の首長墓のうちの一つである。昭和13年に測量され、王塚古墳に後出する前方後円墳で、穂波屯倉と関わりがあると指摘されたが、ほとど未調査であったので、墳丘規模や築造時期、古墳の性格は不明であった。この範囲確認調査で天神山古墳は、6世紀後葉に築造された全長67mを測る前方後円墳で、桂川古墳群で最後に築造された前方後円墳と判明。墳丘形態は北部九州の前方後円墳および王塚古墳やホーケントウ古墳の在地の前方後円墳と共通することが判明。通路状遺構や段状遺構など墳丘付属施設を新たに確認したが、葺石や埴輪の墳丘表飾は伴わないことが判明。墓道・前庭部を検出し、後円部2段目に概ね西に開口する石室が位置することが判明。2回以上の葬送が行われ、初葬時の墓道埋土中より全国的に稀少な４個体の装飾付須恵器を含む須恵器・土師器が破砕供献された状態で出土。最後に築造された前方後円墳や68m前後の墳丘規模は、全国的な傾向からミヤケと関わるとされ、天神山古墳も穂波屯倉との関わりがあると判明した。
