甲府市西端に所在する周知の埋蔵文化財包蔵地である天神北遺跡の発掘調査である。天神北遺跡ではこれまで２度の試掘調査が行われたのみで、今回の調査が初の本格的発掘調査となる。　１区では、縄文時代中期の埋甕・土坑、古墳時代後期の土坑、平安時代中期初頭の竪穴住居のほか、計３条の旧河道を確認した。縄文時代の埋甕は曽利Ⅱ式のⅩ字状把手付大甕を正位で埋納したものであり、甕内部下層から石製小玉が出土したことから埋葬または祭祀に関わる可能性がある。また、洪水被害により廃絶した平安時代の竪穴住居は、埋没河道に堆積する砂層を掘り込み構築されていた。　２区では、古墳時代前・中期の土坑・溝跡、古墳時代後期の土坑・溝跡・石列・集石を確認した。緩やかな曲線を描く古墳時代後期の溝跡は単体で完結する内径約13ⅿ外径24ⅿの円形をした周溝状と推定され、内径側立ち上がりに沿う石列と、円中心付近では版築状の堆積層が認められた。推定される規模が地籍図に見られる半円状の地番未記載地と重複することは、当地に古墳時代後期の葺石を有する円墳が存在した可能性を窺わせるものである。
