Note (General): 上田原東遺跡は豊後大野市三重町の北方、大辻山山塊の北西に張り出す台地上に位置する。発掘調査の結果、縄文時代後期後葉～晩期後葉、弥生時代中期～後期初頭、古墳時代前期後半、古墳時代後期後半の4時期を中心とした遺構・遺物を検出した。　縄文時代の遺構は、竪穴建物18棟、土坑、貯蔵穴、石器集積（デポ）等がある。竪穴建物は後期後葉～晩期後葉で、中でも晩期後葉（上菅生B式）のものが中心となる。晩期後葉のまとまった竪穴建物群はこれまで大分県内では事例がなく、重要な成果である。　弥生時代の遺構は竪穴建物27棟、土坑、溝等がある。竪穴建物は円形・方形のものに加え花弁形建物も1棟確認された。円形建物は後期初頭のものが多い。　古墳時代前期の遺構は竪穴建物16棟、土坑である。遣跡から約500m南に所在する前方後円境の立野古墳とほぼ同時期の集落を初めて確認できた意義は大きい。　古墳時代後期の遣構は竪穴建物9棟、土坑等で、竪穴建物はうち6棟に竈が付く。　その他、古代の竪穴建物1棟、中世の掘立柱建物等の遣構や、旧石器時代～中世にかけての遺物が出土している。
