Note (General): 特別史跡熊本城跡の東部に位置する千葉城地区は、中世に出田秀信が構えた隈本城があったとされるが、詳細は分からない。近世には主として武家屋敷、近代以降は学校や軍の施設等が置かれた。また、古墳時代には横穴が築造されていたことも、過去の発掘調査で分かっている。　今回、特別史跡の整備基本計画策定に向けて近世の遺構等の確認を目的として発掘調査を行った。その結果、現代の撹乱のために近世の遺構や土層はほとんど残されていなかった。中世から近代の土器や陶磁器、瓦等が出土したが、ほとんどが現代の土層からである。また、鉄刀や耳環、須恵器といった古墳時代の遺物も現代の土層から出土した。鉄刀をＸ線ＣＴ調査したところ、「甲子年五□（月カ）□（中カ）」と読める銘文が確認された。鉄刀の型式学的位置付け等から、「甲子年」は 604 年と想定される。遺構に伴うものではないが、発掘調査で出土した銘文鉄刀は全国でも 10 例に満たず、貴重な発見である。兵庫県箕谷２号墳出土の紀年銘象嵌鉄刀のような類似例と比較検討することで、当時の社会状況や国家形成過程の実像に迫りうる非常に重要な資料である。
