調査地は、絵図等によれば久留米城外郭の南東に展開する久留米城下町の中心部に位置し、池町川の南側に形成された原古賀町一丁目の中央付近にあたる。調査の結果、17世紀前半から幕末までの遺構を中心に検出した。これらの遺構は、柳川往還に東接する町屋の裏庭に営まれたものと推察される。また、町屋の境を確認することができなかったため、表口は7間以上を測るものと考えられる。『石原家記』や『久留米藩旧家由緒書』には表口8間以上を有する商屋が散見され、この中には町別当や目付などを担った家もある。このことから、当地についても原古賀町の別当であった大坂屋や田鍋屋などの有力な商家が所有していた可能性がある。
