Note (General): 西原大塚遺跡は、旧石器時代から中・近世にかけての複合遺跡である。今回は遺跡の中央に位置する第243地点の調査成果を収録している。　今回の調査で確認された主要な遺構は、縄文時代の土坑40基、弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期の住居跡１軒、方形周溝墓３基である。　周辺遺跡の調査結果から、本調査地点は縄文時代中期においては環状集落に囲まれた広場の一角に位置すると想定されていたが、約600㎡の調査でも居住関連の遺構は確認されず、埋設土器を伴うものなど主に土坑群の分布域であることが判明した。　弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期においても、住居跡は１軒のみの検出である。一方、３基の方形周溝墓が集中して検出されたことから、本調査地点では通時的に居住空間とは区別された土地利用がなされていたことがわかった。
