千田の台遺跡は、太平洋に注ぐ栗山川の支流である高谷川と多古橋川に挟まれた標高40ｍの台地上に立地する。7世紀中葉から集落が営まれ、7世紀後葉～8世紀前葉に集落の盛期を迎え、その時期に斜行する溝も開削される。9世紀後葉になって再び集落規模が拡大し、第2のピークとなる。以降、規模を縮小させて10世紀代には集落はほぼ終焉すると考えられる。また10世紀代を中心に直径1ｍ程度の土坑群が集落景観に加わる。周辺の境貝塚や芝山町山ノ台遺跡でも同時期の集落が展開しており、これらとの関連も注目される。　中世になると、造営方位が20°ほど西偏した、掘立柱建物・溝などの遺構群が、台地一帯にあらわれる。また合わせて台地整形区画も築かれる。その縁辺には地下式坑を伴うことがわかり、こうした状況は1次調査の調査成果と一連のものになると考えられる。地下式坑の出土資料からは15世紀後半～16世紀前半の時期と考えられ、中世の遺構群はほぼこの時期におさまるであろう。こうした趨勢は、近隣の境砦跡の消長とも同調するものであると考えられる。
