• Note (General): type:Thesis; This study is a research on the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs). A typical thermoplastic resin, polyamide 6 (PA6) and a thermosetting epoxy resin were used as matrices to fabricate unidirectional (UD) CF/PA6 and CF/Epoxy laminates through hot compression molding in chapter 2. Their failure behaviors and mechanical properties were investigated based on the fiber distribution, impregnation conditions and interfacial shear strength (IFSS). The modified Global load sharing (GLS) model was used to predict tensile strengths, which were then compared with experimental results. In chapter 3, the flexural properties and failure behavior of UD CF/PA6 and CF/Epoxy laminates were investigated through a great quantity of experimental tests. Fiber volume fraction, fiber distribution and void content, interfacial properties and fracture toughness were evaluated to investigate their effects on flexural properties and fracture behaviors. In chapter 4, a Monte-Carlo simulation technique based on a finite-element method has been developed in order to clarify the effect of interfacial properties on the fracture behavior of UD laminates. In chapter 5, attention was focused on the residual strength behavior of UD CFRPs composites after off-axis (45°) fatigue loading. Two types (constant and incremental loading way) of loading-unloading low cycle fatigue tests were employed to investigate the modulus history of fatigue process for announcing the fatigue mechanism. The mechanisms responsible for the strength maintaining after fatigue and the higher resistance of the carbon fiber-reinforced composites are discussed based on the present experimental evidence. In chapter 6, two types of polyurethane dispersion (PUD) were applied as surface treatment for washed and non-washed carbon plain woven fabric composites. The effects of surface treatment on mechanical properties of CF/PA6 composites were investigated through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), on-/off-tensile test, acoustic emission test (AE), 3-point bending test, short beam test, Izod impact test and drop weight impact test, respectively. At last, a summary of the whole thesis was concluded in Chapter 7.
