本論文では，ボランタリーなコミュニティ活動として，OpenStreetMap（OSM）のコミュニティ活動について着目し研究を行う.OSMとは，ユーザ参加型によるボランタリーな地理情報データ作成プロジェクトであり，世界中で500万人(2019年現在)に及ぶほどの参加者により活動が行われている．著者は，OSMの活動は社会にとって有益な活動のひとつであり，持続可能な活動であるべきと考え，OSMに着目し，活動に参加するとともに研究を行なっている．本論文では，日本のOSM活動の特性，OSMの有効性，OSMにおいて重要なマッピングパーティにおける参加者のコミュニケーションの重要性，ならびに，市民活動におけるOSMの有効性を明らかにする．これにより，社会におけるOSMの有効性が明らかになり，OSM活動の継続には参加者のコミュニケーションが重要であること明らかになる．以上より，日本におけるOSM活動の継続や社会貢献の可能性を示す．
