• Note (General): type:研究ノート; type:Notes; Art Brut, which means unprocessed art, refers to artwork created by people who are not poisoned by art education. Furthermore, its proposed English translation, “Outsider Art,” is defined as art that is not publicized or available on the market (Hattori, 2003). This study aimed at organizing the historical transition and developments involving Art Brut/Outsider Art from its birth. In addition, we examined its development in Japan, and its future potential. We argue that such pursuit has the power to give us a new perspective toward the modern world that we live in. Meanwhile however, there seems to be an inconsistency between its definition and reality, which is the cause for concern as we consider its future. As a result of careful consideration, we argue that, in comparison with the West, the Japanese psyche is better appreciated for the art of the intellectually disabled rather than the mentally disordered. Also, the inconsistency that we initially perceived could be considered as such if viewed as activities surrounded the artwork, but when viewed from the artwork itself, it is at once true and false. Art Brut/Outsider Art exists in the margins between disability/disorder and normality, artist and audience, medicine/welfare and art. Furthermore it can be viewed as an “outsider” which brings about the margins which makes “art” an insider. Art Brut/Outsider Art could provide us with a new perspective regarding the values of disabled/disordered and healthy person, as well as normality and abnormality.; identifier:13; identifier:KJ00006960339
