エピジェネティクス機構と遺伝現象・異常症について研究を行い、DNAメチル化酵素、メチル化DNA結合タンパク質、クロマチンインスレーター、ゲノムインプリンティング、生殖細胞およびES細胞の分化等において、大きな進展があった。DNMT3A，DNMT3Bの生殖細胞特異的ノックアウトマウスを作成し、それらが不妊であること、配偶子形成過程で起こるDNAメチル化がゲノムインプリンティングに必要であること、このDNAメチル化はDNMT3Aが担うことを報告した。DNMT3Aとその活性化因子DNMT3Lの変異マウスの精巣では減数分裂の進行とトランスポゾンの抑制に異常があり、変異マウスの卵子から生じた胚は胎盤等の異常のために流産することを報告した。雄・雌の生殖系列でメチル化されるインプリンティング領域のCpG分布の比較検討、ICF症候群の発症にDNMT3Lまたは類似の因子が関わる可能性を示した。
