熊本県南部の下益城郡美里町には人々の生活に密接に関わっている用水路や石橋、寺社や石碑といった土木遺産を中心とした構造物が数多く存在しており、高地にあるために用水路が発達した地域である。用水路は生活用水を普及させるために美里町全体に張り巡らされており、歴史的価値が高く、棚田や田園風景のような景観地を維持するためにも美里町に欠かせないものとなっている。本研究では、美里町にある石橋や用水路などの土木遺産や歴史的建造物及び石碑等の文化的に価値あるものを後世に残すためにも、野外博物館化としてその特徴や地域における価値付けし、地域マネジメントの視点から保全・活用する方法を検討した。特に、近代化遺産を中心とした構造物の独自の美里町マップを作成し、景観や地域の歴史と自然が共生する文化のある街づくり手法を提案するものである。
