生物棲息環境の評価・保全・再生とモニタリングの実施を通して、(1) 生物多様性保全のための生物棲息環境の把握と評価、(2) 水産資源の持続的利用のための管理技術の確立、(3) 環境と調和した防災と開発(ミチゲーション技術の確立)の３つの課題に取り組み、政策提言を行った。生物多様性保全のための生物棲息環境の把握と評価では、九州各地の潮間帯で底生生物相の調査を行い、多様な棲息環境を維持・保全するための技術開発と提言を行った。水産資源の持続的利用のための管理技術の確立では、ハマグリ Meretrix lusoria の厳格な資源管理が行われている加布里湾（福岡県）とほとんど資源管理が行われていない白川河口（熊本市）で比較調査を行い、資源管理とブランド化に関する技術開発と提言を行った。ミチゲーション技術の確立では、護岸堤防によって消滅する塩性湿地の植物の移植とモニタリングを行い、台風や高潮などに強い移植先の選定が重要であることを明らかにした。また、それらの結果を元に、熊本市塩屋海岸における塩性湿地の創生計画を事業主体の熊本県に対して提言した。
