本研究ではプロトン伝導性高分子固体電解質を用いて水蒸気から活性水素を電解生成し、酸化性有害物質を常温で高効率に還元浄化する全く新しい電気化学触媒リアクタの開発を検討した。本リアクタの構成要素となる高活性な電極ならび触媒機能物質を開発するとともに、固体電解質への通電が及ぼす触媒作用の促進効果を利用して電気化学触媒の新しい応用分野を切り開くための基本原理を検討した。応用分野としていずれも社会的要請の高い、「排ガス浄化」、「生活空間浄化」および「飲料用水浄化」に着目し、基本触媒反応設計から、触媒および電極の物質設計、電気化学的制御、リアクタ構造の最適化まで一連の基礎研究を展開した。
