本調査は、田口が200７年度～2009 年度の3 年間に科学研究費補助金（基盤研究（Ｃ））の研究助成を受け、「自然葬の社会的・文化的意味空間の研究―生の終末と遺骨処理の文化装置をめぐって」という研究課題を掲げて実施した調査研究の一部をなすものである。本研究課題は1990 年代初頭から日本の大都市を中心に市民運動として展開され今日に至っている「自然葬運動」に焦点を当て、「葬送の自由」を主張するこの運動の今日的な社会的意味を探求し、また日本人の他界観念の文化的主流への対抗的な文化運動としての側面に注目して、少子化、人口の流動化、高齢化と祖先祭祀慣行の静かな風化が進む現代の社会状況を背景におきつつ、新たな遺骨処理の在り方を求める人びとの意識の諸相を明らかにすることである。遺骨処理の在り方と他界表象は、諸民族の社会・文化のなかで深く結びついていると考えられる。日本人の他界表象を把握することは容易なことではないが、伝統的なそれについては膨大な研究の蓄積もある。ただし、それさえも社会の急激な変化のなかで変容を免れえないところであり、今回の調査研究では他界表象の「伝統の変容」という点に力点をおきつつ日本各地の現地踏査をおこなった。
