金属酸化物ナノシートを用いて希土類イオンが層間にインターカレートした層状物質や希土類イオンが格子内に入ったナノシートを作製し、これらがナノシートのバンドギャップ光励起から希土類イオンへのエネルギー移動に基づいた強い発光を示すことを発見した。さらに層間の希土類イオンの場合、それが水和している水分子によって発光が促進されることの発見や希土類イオンのナノシート光電気化学的反応による発光の制御に成功した。
