筆者は2007年度～2009年度の3年間に科学研究費補助金（基盤研究（Ｃ)）の研究助成を受けて、「自然葬の社会的・文化的意味空間の研究一生の終末と遺骨処理の文化装置をめぐって」という研究課題のもとに調査研究をおこなった。この研究課題は1990年代初頭から日本の大都市を中心に市民運動として展開され今日に至っている「自然葬運動」に焦点を当て、「葬送の自由」を主張するこの運動の今日的な社会的意味を探求し、また日本人の他界観念の文化的主流への対抗的な文化運動としての側面に注目して､少子化､人口の流動化、高齢化と祖先祭祀慣行の静かな風化が進む現代の社会状況を背景におきつつ、新たな遺骨処理の在り方を求める人びとの意識の諸相を明らかにすることである。　本調査報告は、このような調査研究の一部を構成するように筆者が企画したアンケート調査の結果の概要報告である。まず調査の目的を述べ、次いで調査対象、調査期間、調査方法など調査実施の概要を記し、最後に回答者の基本属性、回答者の意識の実態など調査結果の概要について表やグラフを織り込み、データとその解説という構成で記述した。
