ハマグリは日本各地の干潟で最も普通に見られる二枚貝であったが、現在は多くの地域で激減している。本研究では『干潟が健全で乱獲がなければ、ハマグリは砂質干潟の優占種で、その保全は漁業だけでなく、干潟生態系を守る上でも重要である』との考えに基づき、本種の生活史特性の把握、個体数激減の原因解明、さらに、資源管理技術確立に向けた研究を進めた。なお、得られた成果を講演会などで発表すると共に、著書やリーフレットにまとめた。
