The Dream of the Rood is one of the most remarkable of all Old English poems. At its centre is a speech spoken by the Cross upon which Christ was crucified. In a striking development of figurative and metaphorical linkages which resembles the technique used in some of the Old English Riddles, the tree tells how it obeyed its Lord like a dutiful thane. Fifteen lines somewhat similar to this speech are carved in Anglo-Saxon in runic characters upon the narrow sides of the Ruthwell Cross, which stands six metres high at Ruthwell, near Dumfries in Scotland. This great stone monument was erected circa A.D. 701; it is covered in panels, carved artistically in deep relief, with subjects drawn from the New Testament, each surrounded by a text in Latin.
