近年の急激な経済発展、工業化によって深刻な酸性雨の被害が懸念される東アジア及び日本における酸性雨モニタリングの現状について示した。東アジア酸性雨モニタリングネットワーク(EANET)はその試行的活動を1998年4月より開始し、現在、中国、日本を含む東アジア地域の10力国がこのネットワークに参加し、それぞれの国内において降水(湿性沈着)、ガス・粒子(乾性沈着)、土壌・植生及び陸水環境に関するモニタリングデータを蓄積している。このネットワークの正式稼働は、試行稼働期間中の観測結果を考慮して、2000年中頃に予定されている参加国の政府間会合の決定により開始されることになっている。一方、我が国においては環境庁が数次にわたる全国規模の酸性雨対策調査を実施してきており、1997年において全国48カ所の国設酸性雨測定局が設置されている。我が国において観測されている醒性雨は欧米のものとほぼ同じレベルであり、近年は発生源対策の進んできた硫酸イオンに比べて硝酸イオンが降水の酸性化に寄与する割合が増加する傾向がみられる。
