This paper estimates labour demands by age and gender using linked datafrom three Japanese instruments: the Census of Commerce, the Census of Manufacturesand the Basic Survey on Wage Structure. The demographic composition of labourdemands in the retail establishment significantly changes at a certain size of sales area:female workers under the age of 40 prevail in large establishments. Estimations in themanufacturing industry show that the percentage of young male workers increases inoutput and area of the establishment. The effect of these non-linearities has been toinfluence retail policy effectiveness on protecting small size establishments.
This paper has been presented at the International Symposium on Employer-Employee Linked Databy Bureau of the Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, National ScienceFoundation and European Union, Washington DC, 21-22 May 1998. And it is based on the results ofthe project at the Economic Research Institute of the Economic Planning Agency, Government of Japan,when the authors were visiting researchers.
