今日、資源の有限性が顕在化する中で、貿易の拡大は環境及び環境:政策にもさまざまな関わりを持つようになり、貿易拡大とそれに伴う経済発展が環境に悪影響を及ぼすとの懸念が生じる一方、各国の環境政策が一部で貿易に歪みを与えているとの指摘もなされている。貿易を通じて各国経済の相互依存関係が強まると同時に地球環境:問題への対処が国際社会の重要課題となっているという状況において、「貿易と環境」の問題は環境保全と自由貿易の推進とをいかに両立させていくのかという問題に関心が向けられているのである。そこで、本稿では、中国の貿易自由化が中国と日本の経済、環境へもたらす影響を定量的に分析した。その結果、1995年時点で中国の貿易自由化が行われた場合、中国の生産額は増加するとともに日本でも増加する。一方、CO2やSO2発生は中国では減少、日本では増加となる。また、中国と日本の合計をみると、生産は0.06%の増加、CO2発生は1.00%、SO2発生は0.99%の減少となる。よって、中国の貿易自由化は、両国に生産拡大効果をもたらす一方、環境を削減する方向に寄与するといえる。それは、SO2発生量に関する「1985年版分析」と「1995年版分析」の2時点比較においても同様な結果であり、中国の貿易自由化は両国に生産拡大効果をもたらし、一方で、環境負荷軽減の方向に寄与する傾向が両年ともに共通してみられるといえる。.
