本書は言語教育、特に仏語・中国語・スペイン語の言語を初級から習い始めた学生について調査したものである。SFCでは第2外国語（特にアジア言語）の教育に力をいれている。総合講座の後に自分の好きな外国語を選択でき、2学期間は必修でインテンシブの授業をうける。3学期目は選択性だが、継続する学生は約3分の2に減少する。継続する学生とやめてしまう学生の動機・要因についてアンケート調査をとりまとめている。
