高血圧自然発症ラット（SHR）の高血圧発症時期にアンジオテンシン拮抗薬（ARB）を一過性に投与すると、休薬後も高血圧・腎障害の発症が抑制され、レニン・アルドステロン共に低値であった．そこで今回はSHR の高血圧発症後である16～18週齢の間ACE阻害薬・ARBを一過性投与（‘一過性パルス療法’）した後休薬した．血圧はパルス療法終了3ヶ月後でも無処置群と比較して約30-40mmHg低値を保った。組織学的に2 週間のARBパルス療法直後では腎細動脈の肥厚が著明に退縮し，ほぼWKYと同様であった．腎臓のマイクロアレイ解析とreal-time RT-PCRではARBパルス投与により細動脈におけるMMP-13活性の誘導・MMP-9活性の低下を認め、蛍光免疫染色でも同様な成績が確認された。これらの変化が腎細動脈肥厚の退縮をもたらし、microvascular remodelingに直接関与することで、投与中止後の血圧低下が持続し，血圧の退行（regression）をもたらす可能性が示された。
