本研究では，行動と脳科学の融合的手法を用い，カラスの高い知性を支える個体認知のメカニズム解明を試みた。行動研究では，カラスの視・聴覚，双方における個体認知を見出した。脳解剖学研究では，カラス脳地図を作成し，脳の全容を世界で初めて描出した。他個体との対面時に活性化する脳部位を同定し，外套－海馬－中隔系が関与していること見出した。この成果は，霊長類とは独立に進化した鳥の知性について，行動・脳の融合的理解への足がかりとなる。
