メタボリックシンドロームに高率に合併する肝脂肪蓄積（非アルコール性脂肪肝（NAFLD））は肥満と独立して糖尿病発症の危険因子となることが知られているが、その成因には不明な点が多い。研究代表者はモデル動物においてリンパ球の刺激により肝脂肪蓄積が生じることを見出した。さらに肝臓周囲を取り囲む免疫担当細胞の活性化状態が肝脂肪蓄積に重要であることも見出した。本モデルの解明が、今後ヒト肝脂肪蓄積の病態の解明、治療法の開発に寄与すると考えられる。
