1型糖尿病の病態形成において、GAD（グルタミン酸脱炭酸酵素）に対する自己免疫応答がどのような役割を果たしているのかを明らかにするために、1型糖尿病の優れたモデルであるNOD（Nonobese-diabetic）マウスを用いて研究を進めた。その結果、GADに対する自己免疫応答は、1型糖尿病の疾患形成に抑制的に働く可能性を見い出すことに成功した。将来、GADを標的とした免疫寛容療法が、1型糖尿病の発症予防や治療に有用である可能性が示唆された。
