マウスに一過性脳虚血を作成し、血流再開の直後に経動脈的に別のマウスから採取した骨髄単核球を移植した。急性期に移植細胞はレシピエントマウスの脳内で確認できなかったが、慢性期では、非移植群に比して移植群において虚血巣の血管新生が有意に促進していた。新生された血管の血管内皮細胞はドナーマウス由来の細胞ではなく、レシピエントマウス由来であることが確認された。しかしながら、移植群で行動学的に有意な改善は得られなかった。
